Families of the female soldiers taken hostage by Hamas terrorists from the Nahal Oz base on Oct. 7 are preparing to release photos of their daughters taken during the initial days in captivity in an effort to ratch up pressure on the government to finalize the hostage release agreement before Prime Minister Netanyahu's upcoming trip to Washington. The images will be made public at 7 p.m.

Netanyahu met the families, now known jointly as the "HaKol Shelahen" (Their Voice) forum, for the first time Tuesday.

Video: Footage showing the kidnapping of IDF female field observers on Oct. 7 by Hamas terrorists

A statement from the advocacy group revealed their demand for an urgent follow-up meeting with the prime minister. "With the return of our daughters and other hostages seemingly within reach, we are imploring the prime minister for an immediate meeting," the statement read referring to reported progress in the negotiations over the hostage release agreement. "We're pleading with him to sign the deal before his Congressional visit."

The forum, established about three weeks ago, is also pushing for the creation of an official inquiry commission.

In a separate move last week, they addressed a letter to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, seeking access to radio communications from their daughters' final shifts.

To date, families of soldiers on duty the morning of Oct. 7 have received partial recordings, while those whose daughters were working night shifts or on standby have received nothing. The letter warned, "If we don't receive the radio communications and visual documentation of our daughters within 21 days, we'll have no choice but to petition the High Court of Justice."

A harrowing video of the abduction of Agam Berger, Liri Albag, Daniel Gilboa, Karina Ariev, and Naama Levy was released in May at the request of their families. They have been held captive for 283 days.

The IDF announced Saturday evening the deaths of two soldiers in the northern Gaza Strip. They were named as Staff Sgt. Yair Avitan, 20, of the Paratroopers Brigade's 890th Battalion, from Ra'anana; and Sgt. First Class (res.) Yakir Shmuel Tatelbaum, 21, of the 7th Armored Brigade's 77th Battalion, from Ma'ale Adumim.

Avitan leaves behind his parents and three younger siblings. He grew up and went to school in Ra'anana, graduating from the Amit Kfar Batya scientific-technological High School. He was buried at the Ra'anana military cemetery.

Shirit Avitan Cohen, Israel Hayom political commentator and Avitan's aunt, eulogized her nephew, "My sweet nephew fell in Gaza on Friday. Our Yair, you didn't even need to be in Gaza, but you insisted, so strongly insisted, on participating in this just war for our people. How worried we were every time you were there. Your grandparents lit trays of candles for you. Prayers to all the righteous just for you to return safely, and this time you didn't come back. There are no words to console your absence."

Ra'anana Mayor Chaim Broida said, "Our hearts break upon learning of the fall in battle of Staff Sgt. Yair Avitan, a son of our city, salt of the earth, who risked his life in defense of the country's security. The Ra'anana community shares the pain of the Avitan family, embraces them, and surrounds them in their difficult hour."

Tatelbaum was a student of Warrant Officer (res.) Elon Weiss, who fell in Gaza two weeks earlier. At the time, he wrote of his teacher, "The heart is broken. Elon Weiss, Teacher Elon. A great educator I had the privilege to know – so pleasant and right for his students and those around him. How I loved to joke with you at school, on trips, after classes, trying to annoy you as much as possible. A teacher loved by everyone without exception."

The deaths of Avitan and Tatelbaum bring the toll of the IDF ground operation to 318.

Five soldiers were killed and seven others wounded, three critically, in a friendly fire incident during fighting in northern Gaza on Thursday, the IDF said in a statement.

The troops from the 202nd Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade were mistakenly struck by tank fire in the Jabaliya area, according to the statement.

Those killed were identified as Cpt. Roy Beit Yaakov, 22, from Eli; Staff Sgt. Gilad Arye Boim, 22, from Karnei Shomron; Sgt. Daniel Chemu, 20, from Tiberias; Sgt. Ilan Cohen, 20, from Karmiel; and Staff Sgt. Betzlel David Shashuah, 21, from Tel Aviv.

Roy and his father together in the Gaza Strip

Cpt. Roy Beit Yaakov

Yaakov is the 21st fatality from the pre-military academy in Eli.

Head of the Binyamin Regional Council and Chairman of the Yesha Council Yisrael Gantz said, "Immense pain for the family, for the community of Eli whose residents and graduates are at the spearhead of the battle, and for all of Benjamin. How much sorrow is involved in the resurrection of the people of Israel in its land. How many heroes do we have who risk their lives so that we can prevail and live here in the land of Israel in peace and security. Thanks to them we will prevail."

Yaakov's funeral will take place at 3:00 p.m. at the military cemetery on Mt. Herzl.

Boim in the army

Staff Sgt. Gilad Arye Boim

Boim's teacher, Michael Ben Ari, eulogized, "My dear student Gilad, one of the best of the best. He was about to be discharged and start studying medicine. Wise, smiling, modest, a beloved friend. The pain is immense."

The funeral will take place at the military cemetery in Karnei Shomron at 3:00 p.m. He leaves behind his parents and four siblings. He was named after Gilad Zar, 41, of Itamar, who was shot dead in a terrorist ambush while driving in Judea and Samaria between Kedumim and Yizhar. The Fatah Tanzim claimed responsibility for the attack.

Chemu (IDF Spokesperson's Unit)

Sgt. Daniel Chemu

Chemu, 20, grew up in Tiberias and for the past few years, lived in Netanya. He studied at Beit Yosef elementary school and later at the Migdal Or middle school in Migdal HaEmek. In high school, he attended the Branko Weiss school in Tiberias.

Sgt. Ilan Cohen

Cohen

Cohen made aliyah to Israel from Argentina after finishing high school. Before enlisting in the IDF, he studied at various yeshivas, including Yeshivat Har Bracha in Judea and Samaria.

Mayor of Karmiel Moshe Koninski said, "Ilan was a lone soldier who came to the absorption center in Karmiel from Argentina and lived in the city for a certain period. Recently he lived in Jerusalem. On behalf of myself and the community of Karmiel residents and the staff of our absorption center, we wish to convey our condolences to the family. May his memory be blessed."

Shashuah (IDF Spokesperson's Unit)
Shashuah (IDF Spokesperson's Unit)

Staff Sgt. Betzlel David Shashuah

Shashuah's family has been informed of his death. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of first sergeant.

The friendly fire incident occurred as IDF troops maintained a position in a building in Jabaliya. A tank crew outside spotted a barrel protruding from a window. Despite being outside its designated firing zone, the tank opened fire, mistakenly striking the Israeli soldiers inside, according to the initial military probe.

The IDF announced Tuesday the death of a soldier in the southern Gaza Strip, the first fatality since the military began to push into Rafah last week.

He was named as Sgt. Ira Yair Gispan, 19, from Petah Tikva. He served in the 7th Armored Brigade's 75th Battalion. His death brings the death toll of the ground campaign in Gaza to 273.

The announcement came as Israel marked a somber Independence Day with festivities muted due to the Oct. 7 Hamas onslaught and the ensuing seven-month-long war.

In the past 12 weeks, there have been many manifestations of the strength and power of the people of Israel. We might have lost sight of what unites us as a nation in the past two years, but experiencing the greatest tragedy in the 75 years of our existence reminded us once again about unity. A light onto the nations in the darkest of times.

And no place is a better example of this than the rehabilitation hospital of the Sheba Tel-HaShomer Medical Center where injured soldiers from all walks of life work to recover.

Dry data tells that around 2,000 civilians, soldiers, and police officers have had limbs amputated or become disabled in other ways in the fighting. In the Yom Kippur War, for comparison, that number stood at 7,200.

This figure is going to change Israeli society, and like it usually happens with other issues, has caught Israel off guard, raising questions about treatment and, of course, the future.

With regard to the treatment, we can safely say that the wounded fighters receive the best care at Sheba. Since Oct. 7, the hospital has received about 900 injured with various degrees of disability. Israel Hayom has gotten a rare glimpse into the recovery process of some of them and their personal stories.

Twenty-six-year-old Naor, a reservist, is working with his physical therapist on a large stability ball to restore function in his injured leg. Slowly slowly, there is movement and the hard work begins to pay off. Naor also has surgery scheduled in a few days.

"I was shot several times in the stomach, chest, and leg," he shared. "I was pulled to the warehouse for the wounded and I felt what was happening to me at all times, so I was able to tell my fellow soldiers exactly what I was feeling at any given moment and describe the situation. They talked to me the whole time and I to them, but eventually it got too hard to speak. At that point, I looked at my leg and saw that it was completely open, just like in the movies, with the blood. My consciousness was clouded but I remember every moment."

Naor's voice is calm. The team wishes him success in the surgery and he nods with a smile. Naor is from Even Shmuel, a religious town near Kiryat Gat. He is 26 years old, but "only" a corporal because his life path was different and unconventional, one that led him to war in Gaza and getting injured.

"I think it's a privilege," Naor said. "We went out to defend the people of Israel, and I know it sounds strange when you see me injured like this, but first of all, I was not killed, and second of all, I know my injury was not for nothing. After all, we didn't want this war. We were called to defend our country. Even before us, many soldiers were wounded in battles, now it's our turn to fight for our home."

Before the outbreak of the war, Naor was supposed to begin his third year at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology to fulfill a dream he has had since childhood.

"I've always wanted to establish a space industry in the Negev. Now I have to see how I'll get out of the surgery and how I'll deal with my studies. It's not that the won't wait for me, but I need to find a solution. I can't sit on Zoom all day. It will be impossible because I have rehabilitation.

"Despite everything, I think that it was our abilities in the military that showed me that this dream is possible, certainly in the Negev. I will recover and return to fulfill it, our industry will succeed, I'm sure of it."

We are not allowed to photograph some of the recovering soldiers, and several we are not even allowed to speak to, given their classified positions. They smile when we enter the room and only say to let the readers know that despite the heavy price, they are f***ing up Hamas.

They feel the need to send words of encouragement to you, the reader. Despite the fact that they are the ones in wheelchairs and required to adapt to a new reality. The sounds of frustration and effort are sometimes heard from the physiotherapy and occupational therapy rooms. The weights are too heavy, the body no longer functions the way it used to.

Suddenly, from one of the rooms, the music of a cello and a violin was heard. Someone was playing "Kol Nidrei" by the German composer Max Bruch. It was First Sgt. Mordechai Shenvald, who had already earned the nickname "the wounded fiddler".

Shenvald was hit by a missile that crushed 11 of his 12 pairs of ribs. His lungs were quickly damaged and his life was miraculously saved, after everyone was already sure that the injury was fatal.

"I live in a truck, I travel around Israel," Shenvald said when the music stopped for a moment. "On the eve of the war I arrived in Jerusalem. The Karlin Hassidim hosted me and from Mea Shearim I went to the reserves."

The cello was played by a young academic officer who asked not to be named or photographed because that is how she was instructed by the IDF.

So we will just say that she is 19 years old from Kfar Saba and that her cello playing brought dozens of people into the small room.

The music is suddenly interrupted by screams. It takes a few seconds to understand that these are screams of joy. One of the soldiers in the next room got up from the bed and managed to take a few steps after a great effort, and Shenvald, who was injured along with him, felt the need to take part in the celebration.

"We are a great people with wonderful support," he says when he returns to the room.

There is not a moment of quiet in the ward, and Knesset member Matan Kahana enters the room.

"Do you know that I used to play the trumpet?" he asks, and to everyone's surprise, Shenvald pulls one out from under his bed. Kahana begins to clean the trumpet quickly while telling everyone about his son who is fighting in Gaza. The two play together and again the corridor is filled with people curiously peeking into the room. A fighter and a Knesset member – a former fighter himself – playing together.

They played for a few minutes when smiling female soldiers burst into the room carrying heavy bags. "Yesterday you said you didn't have iPhones and tablets, so United for Israel's Soldiers took care of it for you," they said. The soldiers respond with shouts of joy. Shenvald, who is already experienced in such events, tells Kahana, "Could you wait a minute? I will make a thank-you-video for them in English and Hebrew". He looks at the camera and begins to record.

"Did you know that the average time such a video is watched is three seconds? So you need to be concise, otherwise they won't watch," Kahana advised, having discovered that his lungs are still strong. "In recent years I've been playing the flute more, but you gave me a trumpet and now I want to play it again. Well, it's good that I came to visit you."

On the other side of the rehabilitation hospital is the orthopedic department. The amputees come here to learn to adapt to their new lives. The families shower them with love, but the road to recovery is long.

For every small success, there is great frustration, but soldiers say that in the end, as cliché as it sounds, at least in the hospital they go through it together. Many Israelis come to volunteer here as well, for instance, a group of retired women who knitted hats and blankets for the injured soldiers "so they'll be warm in the winter."

A star patient in the physical therapy room is 22-year-old Yonatan Ben Hamou. The young officer, who was on the first bulldozer to enter Gaza to help clear the way for other troops, filmed the moment an RPG struck the vehicle and his evacuation to the hospital. He had his left knee amputated under the knee.

The fact that Yonatan is proud to share his story has made him a known figure among Israelis, who, he says, often ask for selfies.

"Everyone wants to take pictures, I have become someone special," Yonatan says while being pushed in his wheelchair by his smiling parents.

A special moment occurs in the room when Yonatan succeeds in standing on one leg. Excitement and worry mix in his mother's face, the physiotherapist smiles from ear to ear and others present in the room try to hold back their tears. If you are looking for an image of victory, perhaps it manifests itself in this small moment of Yonatan Ben Hamou, a young officer who mustered the strength – only God knows from where – to stand on one leg, which carries his muscular body.

"What happened? Why are you so excited? Have you been given a tablet? Calm down," he tells his injured friends who cheer at his progress.

Yonathan's right leg was hit with shrapnel and the toes are still broken. Meanwhile, more wounded enter the room. They still do not understand what happened to them and are somewhat withdrawn. Yonatan is not representative of the group, as he does not express his frustration even for a single moment. He projects strength all the way.

We move to the spacious balcony.

"It's much more pleasant here than anywhere else, spacious," Yonatan says and asks his family for another pack of cigarettes. "In Gaza, I smoked three packs a day easy. You don't see the terrorists at all. They come out of a shaft for a moment and disappear, so you sit and smoke all the time."

The RPG set the bulldozer Yonatan was in on fire. Resourcefully, and "even though I already felt the hot currents in my legs", he jumped from the narrow window to the ground, an action that apparently saved his life. At this point, of all the things he could have done, he pulled out his cell phone and filmed injecting himself with morphine.

"I felt great heat in my legs, but I was conscious and filmed everything. I understood what was happening around me," he recalled while surrounded by friends and family. "You know, officers spend an entire career with the goal of entering Gaza and fighting the way we fight. Even though I was wounded, it's a privilege. I know it seems strange to you that I lost a leg and I'm smiling, but it's a feeling shared by everyone here."

Ben Hamous was born in the Afridar neighborhood of Ashkelon, which has been bombed for years and is largely unprotected. His older friends were also injured, "because that's how it is in wars." A year ago, on the eve of Yom Kippur, he became the hero of the city.

"I arrived at the beach at 2:30 pm and saw crowds of people," he recalled. "When I got closer to the shoreline I saw in the sea, in the distance, people waving their hands. I only saw the head of one of them – then a big wave came and turned him on his stomach and I saw him just floating.

"People tried to break into the lifeguard booth because the lifeguards had finished their shift earlier. In the end, we broke in. I grabbed a surfboard and started paddling. I fought the waves, I came to two people that were waving and I had to choose whom I would save. Based on intuition I chose one and the other I said to wait for the rescue that I already saw coming from afar.

"The guy I put on the surfboard held my legs, and on the way to the beach, we came across another person floating on his belly. I held him under the armpit and started paddling with one hand. At some point I got tired, and the person holding my legs told me he had recovered and could hold the other one. We reached the beach exhausted. After Yom Kippur, I read in the newspaper that one of the people who were there did not survive, but the feeling was that I saved people's lives. That's how I was taught at home."

Yonatan Ben Hamou in rehabilitation (Avishag Shar-Yashuv) Avishag Shar-Yashuv

Before we part, Yonatan has just one request. "My building and apartment are not accessible, so I am forced to stay here on Friday and Saturday because I cannot enter my building and my house. You know, in the army, when you do something bad, you stay in on Saturday. I stay here because I did something good. I lost, I sacrificed for the country and fought for it, I think the minimum that should be done for us is to help us with the apartment."

His father tells him not to worry, and that they will move into a rented house. "Why, father?" Jonathan asks. "Why do we have to pay more, have we not paid enough?"

With this one question, the young Yonatan aptly summarized another problem that Israel is going to face in the coming years. As a country that is largely inaccessible, Israel is also the only country in the Western world that had to run a campaign to prevent people from parking in handicapped parking spots.

While the stumps of the hundreds of wounded men and women are slowly healing, to soon fit a prosthesis, the state needs to quickly do what it can so that Yonathan and his fellow soldiers can return to their homes and to a public that understands their sacrifice.

We were privileged to accompany them this week in their first steps, but we need to make sure that we will be by their side in the coming years as well, in the long struggle likely ahead of them. This is the minimum that can and should be demanded for them

The IDF released Tuesday its findings of an investigation into the terror attack on its border with Egypt earlier this month in which three Israeli soldiers were killed.

"We conducted an incisive and in-depth investigation, based on the responsibility of the commanders to maintain the security and lives of their subordinates," IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said.

He said there were "operational and command faults and gaps" found.

"We will study, fix, and improve them. This is a difficult incident, which could and should have been prevented, and it is our responsibility as commanders, and mine as commander of the army first and foremost, to learn lessons and be better.

"As commanders, it is our duty to provide our subordinates with the conditions to succeed in the mission. The fallen men and women acted impeccably. IDF soldiers who guard the borders work around the clock to thwart border infiltrations, terrorism, and smuggling, and to maintain safe borders. We are proud of their professional and important work," Halevi said.

The military chief further noted that IDF commanders met with the families of the killed soldiers and informed them of the details of their investigation.

"Two factors stand out that had the power to prevent the incident - the attitude toward the security crossing at the fence and adherence to the principle of security," Halevi said.

As part of the investigation into the incident, a probe was held in collaboration with the Egyptian military, against the background of the strategic-security cooperation between the neighboring countries, which included a visit by senior IDF officials to Cairo.

"This is a serious incident with severe operational results that could have been prevented, and lessons must be learned from it immediately," said the IDF's chief of the Southern Command. "Despite the severe results, the forces were able to close the circle and neutralize the terrorist in Israeli territory, before he endangered civilians in nearby areas where many travelers stay."

The IDF findings were as follows:

- The main reasons for the attack were the security passage in the fence, which was hidden but not locked, and the poor implementation of the principle of security and protection in the area.

- It is necessary to refine the order of priorities established between the preparedness for an IDF incident, and the preparedness to deal with the threat of smuggling that is common in this sector.

- No faults or malfunctions were found in the action of the fallen soldiers, as they "positively stood out in their actions as soldiers in the IDF."

- The deployment of defense forces in the area, which is characterized by smuggling incidents along with a large number of Israeli travelers, was necessary. However, the split into pairs, the duration of the task, and the method of control had to be considered and carried out differently, and lessons in this area were produced and applied.

- "The investigation clearly shows that from the moment the terrorist was identified, the forces in the area made contact, acted with determination, and neutralized him," the IDF said.

- It was decided to seal the security crossings of the fence, reduce the duration of the continuous mission of soldiers from 12 consecutive hours, and determine a different minimum number for soldiers in these types of missions.

- Col. Ido Sa'ad, the commander of the Paran Brigade, of which one of the killed soldiers was a member, will be dismissed from his role and moved to another position, for his "overall responsibility for the event and the manner by which operations are carried out in his area."

- The commander of the "Cheetahs" battalion will be reprimanded and his promotion delayed.

Staff Sgt. Ori Yitzhak Iluz, 20, and Sgt. Lia Ben Nun, 19, were shot by the terrorist at the southern border with Egypt early Saturday morning. The third soldier, Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan, 20, was killed in the following shootout between the IDF and the terrorist, who is believed to have been a member of Egypt's armed forces.

Dahan's funeral will be held at noon on Sunday in the military section of the Ofakim cemetery. Iluz will be laid to rest at 5:00 p.m. in Tzfat.

Ben Nun leaves behind her parents and an older sister. Just two weeks earlier, she celebrated her 19th birthday and was set to begin a squad commander course. Six days before being killed in the terror attack, she uploaded a video to social media of her journey in the military and dream to join the Border Police as well as the friendships she had made along the way.

A fellow fighter remembered Ben Nun  as "a very friendly, task-oriented girl. A real leader." Another said, "She always smiled and always saw the good in everyone."

Ben Nun's aunt eulogized her, saying, "I am the aunt of this beautiful warrior, a lovely flower that was picked, all with a pure smile of love. Unthinkable. Our hearts are broken. Crushed by pain."

Dahan's uncle said his nephew was "an excellent and valuable fighter. According to reports, he was the last casualty and we were not surprised. I knew it was him. On the eve of Shavuot, we laughed and sat with the whole family. A despicable Egyptian soldier murdered him.

Dahan's cousin said, "This is how Ohad was raised – to love Israel and care for the country."

Ben Nun and Dahan received posthumous promotions, with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi saying that "they fulfilled their duty and prevented another attack on Israeli forces."

Halevi said on Saturday that the military will "thoroughly" probe the circumstances surrounding the deadly shootings, "drawing the necessary lessons."

He was hit with shrapnel in the leg and received immediate medical attention. Five bullets were fired at the fighters from the direction of the Palestinian village of Deir Sharaf.

In a separate incident on Thursday evening, a Palestinian father and his three-year-old son were injured in an exchange of gunfire between Palestinian terrorists and Israeli troops near the settlement of Neve Tsuf, also known as Halamish. The two, in critical condition, were taken by helicopter to a hospital.

The military said in a statement that "as a result of the gunfire by the [IDF] forces, two Palestinians were hurt." It "regretted the harm" caused to the civilians and said that an investigation into the incident was underway.

The Magen David emergency service said in a statement, "At 20:52 a report was received of two shooting victims on Route 465 near Halamish. MDA medics and paramedics in cooperation with the IDF medical force are providing medical treatment on the spot to two wounded Palestinians, including a 3-year-old boy in critical condition and a 40-year-old man in serious condition."The IDF confirmed that the shooting attack was aimed "at a military position near the settlement of Neve Tsuf in the area of the Ephraim Bridge."

"A preliminary investigation shows that two terrorists fired for several minutes at the settlement, the IDF force recognized the shooting and returned fire. It appears that as a result of the force's shooting, the two Palestinians were injured. The IDF regrets harming those not involved and works to prevent incidents of this type. The incident is being investigated," the IDF said.
