Israel will host the inaugural edition of the IRONMAN Middle East Championship this November, the IRONMAN organization announced Monday.

The first full-length Ironman Triathlon to take place in the Middle East is scheduled to kick off in Tiberias on Nov. 25, 2022 and will include 75 qualifying slots available for the 2023 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, the organization said.

Honorary President of the Middle East Championship, Sylvan Adams, noted, "After the success of the Ironman 70.3 event last year, I am pleased to announce that the follow-up will see Israel host the full-distance Ironman Middle East Championship in Tiberias, overlooking the spectacular and historically significant Sea of Galilee.

"As it is a regional championship, Ironman Israel will attract the finest athletes from all across our region and beyond. We are looking forward to welcoming thousands of athletes from neighboring countries to the beautiful Galilee for what will surely be an historic event," Adams said.

Ironman described the Tiberias course as "flat and fast."

The 3.8-km [2.36-mile] swim will be held in the Sea of Galilee at sunrise, followed by a 180-km [112-mile] cycling course in two laps. The cyclists will ride to Tzemach junction, continuing to the eastern and northern side of the lake to Kfar Nahum (Capernaum).

The marathon leg of the triathlon will consist of four laps along the western shore of the Sea of Galilee from Tiberias to Migdal, then along a red carpet to the finish line.

The Ironman Israel Middle East Championship is slated to take place the same day as Ironman 70.3 Tiberias, which was held for the first time in 2021.

Israel has a new bodyflight record, set Monday by a group of 12 women. In a wind tunnel at the Flybox facility in Rishon Lezion – which simulates skydiving – the members of the all-female group created complicated forms in a state of vertical bodyflight at winds of 240 km/hr (149 mph).

Bodyflight is a new sport in Israel and demands mental concentration as well as physical exertion, particularly using one's core muscles.

Monday's even was the brainchild of bodyflight instructors Inbar Rosen, a skydiving photographer who has made over 4,500 jumps, and Daphne Morley – Israel's reigning freestyle bodyflight champion.

The youngest member of the record-setting group is only 13, and the eldest is in her 40s.

According to Arik Kaplan, president of the Ayelet Federation of Non-Olympic Sport in Israel, said, "Skydiving is a developing sport in Israel, especially bodyflight in a wind tunnel. We at Eilat are working to promote the sport. We invite the public at large to come and try bodyflight."

Last month, another mountain climber – 30-year-old Adi Mass from Kibbutz Maabarot – was killed while climbing the Eagle's Nest in the German Alps. Mass slipped off a cliff and fell to his death. His family read about the accident on German news sites before Israeli authorities could contact them.
