Netanyahu, enough with the excuses – stop the madness

Israel is coming apart at the seams, and only one person has the power to prevent its collapse.

The political system is on the verge of collapse and the State of Israel is coming apart at the seams. The key to stopping this madness is in the hands of one person alone: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Now that he and his family have been given everything their hearts could have desired, and funding is sure to continue abundantly, it is time for the prime minister to roll up his sleeves, show some responsibility, and lead Israel out of this abyss.

Right now, Netanyahu is choosing to look away, ignoring the fact that his partners are perceived to be defying him. Instead of dealing with the matter, he chose to focus on the protests. Justice Minister Yair Levin and head of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee Simcha Rothman misbehave, but instead of reigning them in, he attacks the demonstrators.

It is unclear why Netanyahu is so afraid of his Coalition partners and gives in to their whims. Those who threaten to break the coalition unless their demands are granted know, just like Netanyahu, that they don't have an alternative coalition. The collapse of the government will lead to a loss of power and even before that, to anarchy.

The prime minister hears the voices. Knows what's at stake. Receives reports of huge sums of money transferred abroad and sees the protesters' determination. Hundreds of thousands take to the streets weekly to say – you have gone too far. It won't pass. We will fight with every legal means available to us. And the wave does not subside. It only grows. And the damage to the economy is immediate and considerable. The head of the Bank of Israel warned so. As did economists at the Finance Ministry.

The Opposition too pushed forward with the protests and refuses to negotiate with the Coalition as long as the judicial legislation continues. Both Left and Right are disregarding President Isaac Herzog, who presented a solution to the problem. In a truly civilized country, the president is not presented with conditions or disrespected. It is only done in a political system that has long gone off the rails.

As such, the situation warrants for Netanyahu to step up and be a responsible adult. He has done so in the past. Knew when to step in before the situation got completely out of control. Knew how to reign in his ministers. In one word – he led.

Regardless of whether we support or oppose Netanyahu, we all should hope that the prime minister will step up. And no, dear prime minister, you should not hide behind the attorney general's decision to prohibit you from directly dealing with the reform. Enough with the excuses. It is time for action.
