Common sense prevailed

Both Biden and Trump are glad the impeachment saga is over, for different reasons.

Former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial, which ended with an acquittal, created a strange anomaly. Despite the acrimony between the 45th president and the current White House occupant, Joe Biden, the two actually had a common interest to have this saga end quickly and without a conviction. As far as Biden is concerned, had this trial gone on and on, his legislative and political agenda - including the major bailout he is planning on passing through Congress, would have been threatened.

The trial was a distraction for lawmakers, who instead of passing the major bills that Biden wants or approving his key nominees, had to engage in legal proceedings. Then there was also the animosity between the two camps, which would have reached new heights had the trial been extended through the summoning of witnesses. Biden wants to restore the era of pragmatic governance based on compromise and bipartisanship, especially in light of the enormous challenges facing the nation.

Thus, having the trial end the way it did, could help Biden reach his goal of national unity, or at least create a feeling of reconciliation, especially since some major figures within the Republican establishment, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have lashed out against Trump's over his role in the January 6 riots even though he ultimately chose to acquit him because of constitutional grounds. This showed just how much they are reluctant to go out against Trump's base.

Trump got the outcome that he wanted (despite the ``defection" of seven Republicans), and now he can safely pursue another presidential bid in 2024 without any restrictions and without the stain of being the first president to ever be convicted in an impeachment trial.

Thus, the verdict represents the victory of common sense over sentiment. Keeping in mind that the former president still enjoys strong popularity among the Republican base, having this matter drag out would have led to increased polarization on many fronts. It would also make it impossible for entire sectors within the GOP to emerge out of his shadow. Let's hope that now that this final chapter in the Trump presidency has concluded, things will finally calm down and America will march down a path of success in meeting the challenges that lay ahead.
