As long as the Left is happy

Washington has given back to the Palestinians the right to veto any political process in the Middle East that is not to their liking.

When President Joe Biden won the US elections back in November, the Israeli Left sighed in relief. What was it that made conservative commentators at Yedioth Ahronoth and Haaretz, and the defense establishment so delighted?

The doves were happy to return to the old and familiar world in which the Palestinians are the key to "solving" the regional problems; Sunni Arabs are the same Arabs; and the United States and Europe are back to taming the wild Middle East, including Israel, which only harms itself in its quest for a bi-national state.

The Trump administration threatened to debunk the Left's entire political dogma with its "disruptive" actions, like moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israel's sovereignty in the Golan Heights and right to apply sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and settlements in one-third of Judea and Samaria. Now that nightmare is over.

According to the Left, the latter would have whitewashed the settlements and eliminated "peace." No wonder Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, a representative of this bloc, built his entire election campaign on the promise to halt the move and succeeded. The promise was false, to begin with, for Gantz had no say in the matter.

Former President Donald Trump's cadency revealed how the US treated Israel from the 1990s until the end of 2016. It made no attempt to get all its Arab allies, who depend on the superpower, to normalize ties with the Jewish state.

We know the US could have done so, for that is what Trump proved with the Abraham Accords. The US fed Palestinian stubbornness by supporting the PA and funding the corrupt United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Trump discontinued funding for the UNRWA and Ramallah, but as soon as Biden took office, he reinstated it. Washington has given back to the Palestinians the right to veto any political process in the region that is not to their liking.

In contrast, the last four years made it clear to the Palestinians that diplomacy will skip over them, and Americans and Sunni Arabs will not twist Israel's arm for their sake.

The Biden administration is taking a step backward and is even considering removing the sanctions on Iran, which limit the regime's military aspirations in the region.

The Left is convinced that Prime Minister Netanyahu is using Iran to intimidate his ignorant voters, and that the Iranian threat can be resolved through an agreement, perhaps even eliminated.

They deny Iran's imperialistic aspirations in the region. They ignore the threat the Islamist republic poses to Israel, which stems from their own interests, perceptions, and very identity.

The Left's doves are convinced that the Palestinian threat is no longer, and that Israel will remain isolated in the Middle East as long as it doesn't "resolve" its conflict with the PA.

Their vision is skewed. The Obama administration endangered the Jewish state and created severe political and security challenges. It strengthened Israel's enemy by providing it with exorbitant amounts of money.

The Trump administration demonstrated what benefits could be reaped if the US cultivates its relationship with Israel as a responsible regional force, but the Left is choosing to turn a blind eye. For this reason alone, the next government should not be entrusted to them.
