The Population and Immigration Authority unveiled Tuesday its annual report on popular names in Israel for 2024, revealing subtle yet notable shifts in naming preferences among Israeli parents compared to the previous year.
In the general sector, Avigail continues its reign as the most popular girls' name, showing remarkable growth with 1,156 babies receiving the name, up from 1,038 in the previous year. Miriam demonstrated substantial gains, securing second place with 1,015 newborns named, a significant increase from 867 in the prior year. The top ten witnessed a notable change with the emergence of "Ella," while "Maya" departed from the rankings.

Examining the popular names across Israel's demographic spectrum, including both general and Jewish sectors, the data shows Mohammad maintaining its overall leading position among boys in the general sector, despite experiencing a minor decline from 1,777 to 1,740 babies. Meanwhile, Ariel demonstrated impressive momentum, advancing from fifth position to claim the top spot in the Jewish sector with 1,013 babies receiving the name.
The rankings saw several notable shifts, particularly in the Jewish sector, where "Yehotanan" no longer appears among the top ten boys' names, yielding its position to "Eliya." Additionally, "Leah" showed marked improvement within the Jewish sector, advancing from tenth to eighth place, while "Libi" made similar progress in the general sector, also moving from tenth to eighth position.
