In a startling discovery at Ben Gurion International Airport, authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle nearly 70 snakes of various species into Israel. The suspect, a Jerusalem resident returning from Italy, was detained as authorities uncovered dozens of bags containing the illegal reptiles, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking.
Israeli Border Police Unit 747 at Ben Gurion Airport detained a Jerusalem resident returning from Italy after a routine luggage inspection revealed shocking cargo. Detectives discovered dozens of bags containing various snake species prohibited for import. Upon this discovery, unit members promptly alerted the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and Veterinary Services, who joined the investigation to identify the confiscated reptiles. The final tally revealed approximately 69 snakes of different species.

Uri Liniel, head of the Wildlife in Captivity Department at the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, commented on the incident: "This represents a significant quantity of non-native reptile species that the suspect attempted to smuggle into the country. The animals were transported under substandard conditions, lacking necessary permits and health certificates. We will strive to repatriate them to their country of origin. The individual behind this smuggling attempt was motivated by financial gain, violating numerous laws in the process. We dedicate substantial resources to prevent wildlife smuggling into Israel. When we intercept such attempts, we ensure that offenders face the full force of the law. This case, like other instances of wildlife and wildlife product smuggling into Israel, will be treated with utmost seriousness."
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority said that wildlife smuggling and importing protected natural resources into Israel constitute severe violations of multiple laws. These offenses encompass animal cruelty, public health endangerment through the introduction of zoonotic diseases and parasites, customs violations, money laundering, wildlife harm, and the potential introduction of invasive species. Such species can cause significant damage to local ecosystems and often result in extensive agricultural losses. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Israel Police, and Customs, will continue to address this issue, working diligently to prevent future smuggling attempts and ensure that offenders face severe consequences.
