IDF extracts bodies of 6 captives in Gaza raid

On Tuesday morning, Kibbutz Nirim confirmed that the bodies of Yagev Buchshtab and Nadav Popplewell had been recovered from a tunnel in Khan Younis. Both were declared dead by the IDF in July, while their bodies were still in captivity. Kibbutz Nir Oz announced another hostage's body, Yoram Metzger, as having been returned as well, as well as Avraham Munder, whose death was not previously known.

The IDF successfully retrieved the remains of six hostages from a tunnel in Gaza during a covert night operation on Monday night. The mission, based on intelligence from Israel's security agencies, marks a significant but heartbreaking milestone in the efforts to recover those taken captive.

The recovery mission, orchestrated using intelligence from the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence Directorate, led to the discovery of the remains inside a tunnel network in the Hamad neighborhood of central Khan Younis. While the approach to the tunnel involved firefights with nearby fighters, the forces encountered no resistance within the tunnel itself. Following the retrieval, the IDF completed the identification process before delivering the devastating news to the families of the deceased hostages.

The operation remains active, with forces continuing to scour the tunnel for any additional remains or intelligence that could prove valuable to the IDF. Military officials are hailing this as a significant achievement for the 98th Division, which is currently deployed in Gaza. The complex mission involved a coordinated effort from the 98th Division, 35th Brigade, engineering units, the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit, the Shin Bet, and Unit 504, the human intelligence arm of the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate.

On Tuesday morning, Kibbutz Nirim confirmed that the bodies of Yagev Buchshtab and Nadav Popplewell had been recovered from a tunnel in Khan Yunis. Both were declared dead by the IDF in July, while their bodies were still in captivity. Kibbutz Nir Oz announced another hostage's body, Yoram Metzger, as having been returned as well, as well as Avraham Munder, whose death was not previously known.

Buchshtab's wife, Rimon, received the news from the Israel Defense Forces about her husband's remains being returned. Just a month ago, the IDF had declared him killed in Gaza, with his body held by Hamas. The return of his remains to Israel has provided a small measure of solace to Rimon Kirsht Buchshtab, who herself had been kidnapped and later freed in a prisoner exchange after 53 days.

Reflecting on the day she learned of his death, Rimon shared, "Our final moments together were filled with embraces, kisses, and declarations of love." Speaking of their time in captivity, she added, "Yagev constantly reassured me that if I was alright, he was too. He kept saying it would only be a few more days before he'd be home. We even planned how I'd be waiting for him on the couch in Nirim, surrounded by our dogs and cats, cooking his favorite meals. It was supposed to be a matter of days, not end like this. My heart is shattered."

Since her release, Rimon had been holding onto hope for her partner's return – her childhood sweetheart. Tragically, while they were both taken alive, only she returned that way. Yagev , 35, was abducted alongside Rimon from their home during the October 7 attack. Born in Kibbutz Nirim, Yagev met Rimon, who hailed from Kibbutz Magen, during their school years. They played in a band together in high school and married about two years ago. The couple shared a passion for music and animals, raising dogs and cats. Yagev was a skilled guitar maker and player, while Rimon was a drummer. Ironically, the safe room from which they were kidnapped on October 7 doubled as Yagev's guitar-making workshop.

Popplewell, 51, also from Kibbutz Nirim, was taken alive, with the IDF confirming his death in early June. Described as a sensitive and quiet individual, Popplewell was a talented IT professional working in Sderot. He was known as a devoted son, brother, and uncle, with a love for books and science fiction. Nadav was kidnapped from his home's safe room along with his mother who was released after 49 days in captivity. Tragically, his older brother, Roy, was killed during the October 7 attack.

In the chaotic hours following the terrorist infiltration of the kibbutz on October 7, Nadav's sister Ayelet received a chilling WhatsApp photo showing Hanna and Nadav with an armed captor behind them. More photos were later posted to Hanna's Facebook account. Ayelet described her brother as an "amazing" uncle to his nieces and nephews, highlighting his passion for science fiction and his skill as a bridge player.
