A Wall Street Journal poll revealed Sunday a shift in American sentiment toward the Israel-Hamas war. A significant portion of voters, around 42%, believe Israel's response to the Oct. 7 attacks by the terror organization has been excessive. Conversely, 19% feel the IDF hasn't taken enough measures, with 24% considering its actions appropriate.

The poll, conducted from February 21-28, also highlights a growing empathy toward Palestinians. As Israel intensifies efforts against Hamas, resulting in displacement and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, sympathy for the Palestinian cause increases. Hamas has said that over 30,000 people have been killed since the IDF ground operation began, though distinctions between terrorists and civilians are blurred.

Due to the war, US President Joe Biden faces challenges both domestically and diplomatically. His support for Israel's actions draws disapproval from 60% of voters. Concerns mount among Biden's aides that this stance may impact votes in the upcoming election, evidenced by a significant "uncommitted" vote in Michigan's Democratic primary.
In the recent poll, 60% of voters expressed disapproval of Biden's handling of the conflict, marking an 8-point increase from December, while 31% approved of his actions. Notably, over 100,000 individuals in Michigan's Democratic primary opted not to support Biden, reflecting dissatisfaction with his stance on Israel. Additionally, 40% of Democrats under 40 believe the US is overly supportive of Israel, contrasting with 33% of older Democrats, indicating a 7-point difference from December. Among Democrats of all ages, around 71% feel Israel's response to Hamas has been excessive.
Tensions between the Biden administration and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been on the rise. Struggles in delivering aid to Gaza exacerbate the situation, with plans for an invasion of Rafah, where many displaced Palestinians reside, adding to the complexity. Israel believes, however, that the Rafah operation is vital to dismantle Hamas and ensure the release of the 136 Israeli hostages still held by the terror organizations, including children and the elderly.
