A second victim, a man in his late thirties, was in serious condition. He was taken to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. A twelve-year-old child was also in the car and escaped unharmed.
At least one terrorist opened fire on the victims – firing over 20 bullets – while they were driving on the Route 60 highway, close to the Beit Hagai Junction.

The woman and her daughter had apparently hitched a ride with the man, who was the driver, shortly before the attack.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was being updated on the details of the shooting. The IDF has launched a manhunt after the suspect or suspects and imposed a partial blockade on the area.
Hamas praised the attack, saying it meant "that the rebellious youth can determine the time and place to confront the Israeli aggression."

Head of the Gush Etzion Regional Council and the Yesha Council Shlomo Ne'eman responded to the shooting, saying, "Yet another shocking attack – we send a warm embrace to the family of the victim at this difficult time and pray for the recovery of the injured driver. The terrorists act as a result of the hate education and funding from the Palestinian Authority, with the goal of massacring us. The government simply can't continue down the path of the terrible Oslo agreements.
"We demand that the government of Israel and the IDF forces change course and act with all means at their disposal to deal a severe blow to the terrorist infrastructure and the terrorist PA. The supporters, the instigators, and the sponsors of terrorism can no longer continue with their daily routine. There is a war here and in a war one must behave accordingly," Ne'eman said.
