The first victim was a Palestinian laborer who had fallen into the eight-meter-deep hole and lost consciousness. The police said he was staying in Israel illegally and that a resident of the village was arrested on suspicion of employing him.
The two firefighters were reportedly unprepared for the toxic fumes and lack of oxygen in the pit, which caused them to lose consciousness.
Additional firefighters descended – this time with protective gear – and pulled out the three.
The Palestinian laborer – later identified as Samad Alaramin, a 20-year-old from Si'ir, northeast of Hebron – was hospitalized, but later died.
The firefighter – Adnan Assad, 40, from Beit Jann – was pronounced dead at the scene. He leaves behind a wife and three children, including a two-month-old daughter.
