Prosecutor Jack Smith told reporters his office is seeking a speedy trial, alleging a "conspiracy" by Trump to subvert the election results.
"The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using knowingly false claims of election fraud," the indictment said.
The case is assigned to US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, with four charges against the former president: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights.
Trump spearheaded a "stop the steal" campaign after losing to US President Joe Biden, including calling officials in Georgia and riling up supporters ahead of the election certification. This culminated in the deadly storming of Capitol Hill by his supporters.
Trump is due to appear before Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya for an arraignment hearing on Aug. 3.
"I hear that Deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024, will be putting out yet another Fake Indictment of your favorite President, me, at 5:00 p.m.," Trump said earlier.
He suggested the timing, two and a half years later, was to influence the 2024 presidential race.
Ex-vice president Mike Pence said the indictment "serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States."
This indictment joins another case relating to Trump withholding classified documents from US authorities and storing them at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
