At least two projectiles were fired from southern Lebanon toward Israel on Thursday, three security sources told Reuters on Thursday. Lebanese media also reported the incident, and the Hezbollah-linked Al-Manar said there were two explosions in the area of Ghajar, a village that lies on the border between the two countries.
About an hour later, Israeli forces struck the area of Lebanon from which the cross-border launch was carried out, the military said. The statement said a projectile was fired earlier from within Lebanon had exploded within Israeli territory. A previous, statement by the military had said there were no preliminary findings of any unusual events on Israel's side of the border. Israeli officials believe the projectile was likely to have been a mortar.

Hezbollah issued a statement referring to the recent IDF activities in the village, part of which technically lies in Lebanon. "The Zionist occupation forces have taken dangerous action recently, in the northern part of the village, which has been recognized by the United Nations as part of Lebanon's territory."
The terrorist organization said that the steps taken by the IDF include setting up a barbed-wire fence around the town "just like they have done between Lebanon and occupied Palestine" and warned that this amounts to "total occupation of Ghajar by force" and that "this is not a typical provocation."

Another escalation in the area has been unfolding in recent weeks in the wake of Hezbollah's decision to set up tents on Israeli territory in the Sheba Farms area. The UN has ruled that these two tents were beyond the official "Blue Line" recognized as the international border and Israel warned that it could take action to assert its sovereignty. In recent days, one of the tents has apparently been taken down by Hezbollah.
