"Israel relayed a clear message to the Egyptian government. We expect that the joint investigation will be exhaustive and thorough," Netanyahu told his cabinet in televised remarks. "We will refresh procedures and methods of operations and also the measures to reduce to a minimum the smuggling and to ensure tragic terrorist attacks like this do not happen again."
Staff Sgt. Ori Yitzhak Iluz, 20 and Sgt. Lia Ben Nun, 19, were shot by the terrorist at the southern border with Egypt early Saturday morning. The third fighter, Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan, 20, was killed in the following shootout between the IDF and the terrorist, who is believed to have been a member of Egypt's armed forces.
Ben Nun was laid to rest on Sunday in the central city of Rishon Lezion.
"I love you and miss you already," her sister Ofir said in her eulogy. "I don't know what I'll do now."
Iluz's funeral was held in the northern city of Safed, and Dahan was buried in the southern town of Ofakim.
The terrorist was later identified as 22-year-old Mohamed Salah Ibrahim from Cairo. According to Arab media, Ibrahim was drafted into the Egyptian military in June last year and stationed on the border with Israel as a policeman. He is believed to have suffered mental distress following the death of a comrade and was disgruntled over his military service.
