Jordan was to host Sunday a meeting between senior Israeli and Palestinian security officials aimed at halting a recent surge in violence that has stoked fear of wider escalation ahead of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, officials said.
Sources said the one-day meeting in the Red Sea port of Aqaba will bring the officials together for the first time in years, along with representatives of key regional parties. US President Joe Biden's adviser on the Middle East, Brett McGurk, is also scheduled to attend.
The talks are part of Jordan's increased diplomatic engagement with the United States and regional partner Egypt to restore calm in Israel and Palestinian territories and rebuild trust between the two sides, the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
"Such a meeting has not happened in years... It's a major achievement to get them together," said one Jordanian official.
Previous years saw clashes erupt between Israeli police and Palestinian rioters around Jerusalem's Al Aqsa compound at the height of Ramadan. The site is holy to both Islam and Judaism (as well as Christianity), with Jordan being the custodian of the Al Aqsa Mosque located on the compound.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions with terror organizations and ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip and Palestinian territories. Just recently, a terrorist carried out a ramming attack in northern Jerusalem, killing three people, including two children, and a rocket was fired into Israel.
