The development was soon afterward confirmed by French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. He said the suspect was neutralized by police.
Law enforcement said the attacker was shot several times by police and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The attacker's motivations were not immediately clear, the police added.
One police source said the officer who shot the attacker was off-duty.
