Reports from Iran have indicated that the ongoing protest against the ayatollahs reached a symbolic milestone on Thursday night as demonstrators managed to burn down the house in which Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamist regime in 1979 in a violent revolution, was born.

The structure, in the city of Khomein, has not been used as a residence for the past 30 years, as it has been repurposed as a museum celebrating the life of the late ayatollah.
The protests in Iran were sparked by a deadly incident in which a Kurdish 22-year-old woman was beaten to death by interrogators from the so-called morality police after they spotted her without a proper head covering in Tehran.

Her death underscored the crackdown by hardline President Ebrahim Raisi against women and the departure from what had previously been a "blind-eye" policy. It led to many demonstrations, including violent ones, with young Iranians from all sectors rallying up against the regime. This has included various brazen efforts to defy the ayatollahs, including by means of direct insults and provocations, which have resulted in scores of deaths in the clashes.
In recent days the first death sentence was handed down to a protestor involved in the riots.
