Worshippers began arriving throughout the night as preparations for the upcoming Jewish new year.
Another major selichot prayer will be held after Shabbat, at 00:15 a.m., the last one ahead of the holiday, and will include prayers for the well-being of the general public.
Efforts are being taken to distribute the crowds and allow every visitor to visit the holy site and join the prayers.
The Western Wall Heritage Foundation said that entrances to the Old City and the Western Wall will be closed if there is congestion. As such, private vehicles will not be allowed in and entrance will only be possible for pedestrians.
