A Haifa woman found an unwelcome surprise in her home on Tuesday after discovering that a wild boar had entered and began rummaging for food.

The boar apparently entered after breaking a window and was probably there for at least several minutes before the woman discovered it. When the animal realized the owner was back, it immediately left.

Although Haifa residents have grown accustomed to the presence of wild boars on the streets, in recent years there has been a noticeable uptick in the spotting, in part because of the increasing population of both residents and animals, and the expansion of residential areas into woodlands on Mount Carmel.
Haifa previously allowed hunters to keep the boar population in check, but the practice was scrapped after Mayor Einat Kalisch-Rotem became mayor several years ago. While the new mayor insists the animals are part of nature and should be protected, some residents want them gone.
