It seems that the Russian military fears that its sites could be damaged in an IDF strike. A Syrian official told Asharq al-Awsat, a London-based and Saudi-owned paper, that Russia specifically told Iran to leave bases in the coastal province of Tartus, which houses a large Russian navy base, and in the Masyaf area of Hama, where a Syrian air defense base houses Russian-made equipment, including long-range missiles.
News come days after the Syria accused Israel of striking the Aleppo and Damasus airports, reportedly trying to prevent an Iranian plane carrying weapons from landing.
