The reports named the officer as 2nd Brig. Gen. Abolfazl Alijani. A native of Isfahan, Alijani was a senior officer in the IRGC's ground forces and served as a "military advisor" in Syria.
The English-language news site Iran International emphasized that Alijani served with the IRGC but was not a member of the Quds Force, which carries out Iranian operations beyond the borders of the Islamic Republic.
The report hailed him as a "martyr" and said his body would be brought to Iran for burial in the next few days.
No details were available about the circumstances of Alijani's death. The time of his demise does not correlate with recent strikes in Syria that foreign news sources attributed to Israel.
