A document detailing the plan was presented at a Zoom press meeting, which was attended by a series of political and social leaders, led by al-Qudwa, who is the nephew of Yasser Arafat, former chairman of the PLO.
Qudwa previously served as a minister and Palestinian envoy to the United Nations but was dismissed from Fatah by Abbas for creating an independent electoral list for the PA's parliamentary elections, which were scheduled for last year, but have been canceled since. Abbas saw the move as an attempt to split Fatah and accused Qudwa of "going against the national consensus."
"We are currently in the world situation since the Oslo Accords" Qudwa said at a press conference. "The goal of the initiative is to move towards a broad and profound change in the political system and to rebuild its institutions to prevent collapse. It should be recognized that the arena has changed and that there are new players and movements that have the right to be part of the political system."
The document presented at the Zoom meeting said, "A temporary institution must be established to deal with the challenges that lie ahead of us, and work to strive for national healing."
It was endorsed by 65 Palestinian leaders, largely those who oppose Abbas and demand a wider political representation of society.\
