Israeli children's author Uri Orlev, whose work masterfully depicted his early life during WWII died Tuesday. He was 91.

The author of dozens of books, Orlev received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1996 for his "lasting contribution to children's literature," the 1972 Prime Minister's Prize for Hebrew Literary Works, and the Bialik Prize for literature in 2006.
Prime Minister Yair Lapid eulogized Orlev as "one of the greatest Israeli writers of children's books," saying, "Our children grew up on his books. His memories of the Holocaust and of Israel's establishment taught them about our history. His legacy will remain with us forever."
