Bismuth, who headed Israel's most widely read paper between 2017 and early 2022, hopes to get enough votes in the primaries so as to be placed high up n the party list. Under Israel's electoral system, each part gets seats according to its share of the overall vote. Likud is expected to get above 30 seats.
Bismuth announced his bid on Twitter, with a video. "You said I am right-wing, you said I am Likud," he said. "You were right! I have decided to run in the Likud primaries."
Bismuth told Israel Hayom, "I feel at home in Likud, I have been warmly embraced."
Before becoming its chief editor, Bismuth served as Israel Hayom's foreign editor and analyst. In 2004 he was appointed as Israel's ambassador to Mauritania and before that worked in Paris as Yedioth Ahronoth's correspondent in Europe.
