Israel has appealed to Greek authorities to release David Ashkenazi, 52, who was arrested in Kos over his alleged involvement in a drug deal dating back to 2007.

The Foreign Ministry has argued that Greek authorities should, in fact, be searching for a man who goes by the name Dudi Ashkenazi. As the former is a common moniker in Israel for "David," Israeli authorities believe this is a case of mistaken identity.
Ashkenazi, an insurance adjuster from central Israel, traveled to Greece last week with his wife on vacation. He was arrested as soon as he was on Greek soil. According to Israeli media, there is a standing Interpol arrest warrant for the real suspect, which is what probably led to Ashkenzai's erroneous arrest.
Ashkenzai's lawyer told Israeli media on Tuesday that he was "optimistic" that his client will be released soon.
