The 30 million shekel ($9 million) plan will cover three main areas: municipal, national and budgetary. Sixteen million shekels ($4.7 million) will be allocated to joint projects with local authorities; Seven million ($2 million) will go for the development of leadership in the field of employment as well as public campaigns calling for tolerance; Another seven million shekels will be used by various government ministries and civil society organization to develop unique solutions for the LGBTQ community.
The Social Equality Ministry said it would put extra emphasis on programs for members of the LGBTQ community who also belong to a minority, such as the transgender community, the Arab sector, the religious sector, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.
Cohen praised the "trailblazing project," saying, "This is a long-term plan that aims to ensure that from now on there is no way back in the state's approach to the pride community, with the understanding that many in the LGBTQ community still suffer from discrimination and pay for it with their mental health and economic and social status."
In related news, Tel Aviv will hold a special event on Thursday for LGBTQ youngsters who are slated to start their military service this year.
The soldiers-to-be will learn about their rights and have the opportunity to ask any questions that might preoccupy them ahead of recruitment.
The event is organized by the Tel Aviv Municipal LGBTQ Community Center, the Israel Defense Forces, and the Israel Gay Youth NGO. On June 25th, Tel Aviv will also mark its annual gay parade as part of the international Gay Pride Month.
"The conference is meant to provide real answers to the needs of the LGBTQ who are joining the IDF, who are interested in having a meaningful military service," Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality Meital Lehavi said. "To the boys and girls who are afraid to come out of the closet, [I would like to say that] this conference is a network of support and proof that the people's army is for the entire people."
