The PLFP is designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, and the European Union.
Saadat, 69, has been serving as PFLP secretary-general since 2001. He is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence over terrorism offenses, including masterminding the 2001 assassination of then-Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi.
Founded in 1967, the PFLP is the second-largest faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization after Fatah, from which Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas hails.
Palestinian media reported that Abbas had called both Saadat and Mezher and congratulated them on being re-elected.
