The neck protector was developed with innovative technology by Israel Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai.
As first learned by Israel Hayom some four years ago, Shabtai, then the commander of the Border Police, ordered the development of new protective wear after a terrorist attack at Damascus Gate in which Border Policewoman Staff Sgt. Hadas Malka died after being stabbed in the neck.
"We asked the suspect to take off his backpack," recounted M. "He entered accompanied by two officers and he quickly drew a knife from his pocket and attacked me… but I managed to push him off with both hands."
A senior police official said, "In recent years, we've seen more and more terrorists armed with knives. Sadly, a knife wound could be lethal, as we've seen in some of the cases. On Sunday, the force of the stab was very strong and the knife was extremely sharp. Thanks to the Hadas neck protector [named in for Malka] a far more serious injury was prevented."
