Some 36 of the world's top judokas are expected to participate in the event alongside hundreds of other competitors.
The Judo Masters is considered the third most important tournament in the sport after the Olympic Games and World Championships and essentially rounds up judo's annual event circuit.
It is also professionally significant: a gold medal in the Masters is worth 1,800 points for a judoka, a silver medal earns them 1,260 points, and a bronze – 900 points, which impacts the athletes' international ranking.
In recent years, the prestigious competition has been held in China, Qatar, and Russia.
