Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl's older brother, a six-year-old with autism, was playing with matches and accidentally started a fire. The girl, identified in media reports as Libby Kalich, too had autism.
The father managed to save the son by throwing him out the window, but his daughter, who was in her bed at the time, was trapped. When firefighters entered the still-enflamed building, they found the girl, however, she showed no vital signs and medical eventually declared her dead.
The mother was airlifted to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa in serious condition after suffering from second-degree burns and smoke inhalation. The medical team said she required extensive treatment, but her life was not in danger.
The father, who also had second-degree burns and suffered from smoke inhalation, was taken to Galil Medical Center in Nahariya in moderate condition.
The family is originally from Petach Tikva. Both children were adopted. The city's mayor, Rami Greenberg, said in a statetement that welfare workers were in contact with the family to provide assistance.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, which had spread to open areas around the house, after several hours.
