"Ariel Kahana will receive the award in recognition of a series of articles and interviews about antisemitism in the United States, Israel-Diaspora relations and the integrity of the relationship in a time of corona," the organization said.
According to the organization, the prize is designed to recognize the excellence in reporting on contemporary Diaspora Jewish communities and on the interaction of Jewish communities with Israel. "The award is widely recognized as the most prestigious prize in the Israeli media industry for Diaspora reportage and was established to help strengthen the relationship between Israel and the Diaspora," the organization said in a statement. "The award highlights the important contributions the media can make toward strengthening the relationship between Israel and world Jewry by encouraging quality reporting on Diaspora communities and Israel-Diaspora relations," it continued.
One of the most important pieces Kahana wrote on the Diaspora was on the threats facing Jews in the United States because of a surge in antisemitic sentiment. "The unprecedented uptick in antisemitism in the United States is forcing even the most ardent American Jews to reconsider whether the future that awaits them is as prosperous and safe as they thought it would be," Kahana wrote in the article.
Israel Hayom Editor-in-Chief Omer Lachmanovitch congratulated Kahana and issued the following statement: "Ariel Kahana is one of the leading journalists in Israel. His reporting on diplomatic matters and on Diaspora affairs has resulted in countless important exposés that have benefited our readers, and this makes us proud."
The organization also announced that a certificate of merit would be awarded to Yisrael Katzover, a reporter and commentator for Hamodia, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award to journalist Shlomo Nakdimon.
The organization said the awards honor the late Wolf Matsdorf, who was the editor of the World Center-Jerusalem's journal Leadership Briefing and are also in memory of his wife Hilda, a "pioneer in social work in both Australia and Israel," and Luis and Trudi Schydlowsky.
