The statistics show that 23 antisemitic hate crimes occurred in March this year, an uptick from the 12 incidents reported in the same period last year. In February, the NYPD reported 56 crimes of Jew-hatred across the city.
In addition, a 250% increase in such incidents was recorded in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. Altogether, there were reports of 94 crimes targeting Jews in the last three months. These included physical assaults, verbal violence, vandalism, and others.
The rise in antisemitic incidents comes amid an overall increase in crime across the five boroughs. The NYPD says crime rose more than 36% last month as compared to a year ago.
"The NYPD will continue to provide fair, effective, and responsive policing that best reflects the needs of the communities we serve," Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said. "But the NYPD needs the steadfast commitment of all its partners, pulling in the same direction, to realize our goal of public safety for every New Yorker."
