The coffee chain said in a statement it was investigating the matter "with utmost severity and seriousness" and would close the branch where the incident occurred for 48 hours to brief the staff on procedures. Aroma also said it has updated its policy on the use of cleaning products in all branches.
The company has found that the customer ingested grease remover, which one of the cafe employees handed to him by mistake, instead of a cold tea he had ordered.
"We are constantly in touch with the customer's family and would like to once again express our sincerest and deepest apologies to him and his family for the serious case and wish him a speedy recovery," the statement said.
The man is hospitalized at the Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba.
"We hope to wake him up today," one of his doctors said.
The police have questioned one of the employees involved in the incident.
