According to available details, a Palestinian man boarded a bus in Gush Etzion and began attacking the passengers. A struggle ensued, during which he was able to stab one of the passengers. Armed civilians who were on the bus engaged the terrorist and shot him.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene rushed the man, who suffered wounds to his upper torso, to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. The terrorist's condition remains unclear at this time.
A military spokesman said, "We received a report about an attempted stabbing attack near Elazar in Gush Etzion. The terrorist was neutralized. The details are under investigation."
Earlier Thursday, Israeli troops on a counterterrorism mission in the West Bank city of Jenin came under fire.
Palestinian gunmen opened fire on the troops, seeking to arrest a suspected terrorist, and also hurled explosives at them. The troops returned fire and three Palestinians were killed in the exchange. Israeli forces completed their mission, also arresting additional suspects, Channel 12 News reported.
The raid also uncovered illegal weapons, which the troops seized.
One soldier sustained minor injuries and was taken to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for treatment.
On Thursday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the Israeli operation as a "dangerous escalation against our people and holy sites."
In a statement released by his office, he said this escalation includes "the invasion of Jewish extremists of the Al-Aqsa mosque [on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem] under the protection of the police and the ugly crimes of the occupation forces in the city of Jenin, whereby several civilians were killed and 14 other were wounded, among them three in serious condition."
