"We have exposed an Islamist cell that operated as a modesty patrol and threatened male and females students," Ben-Gurion University of the Negev President Daniel Chamovitz revealed at a cultural event in Beersheba Saturday.

According to Chamovitz, three individuals were involved in the modesty patrols, which sought to enforce adherence to Islamic dress codes among Bedouin students at the school. The university's president would not, however, confirm whether they were continuing to study at the school.
In a statement, Ben-Gurion University's student union said, "We were surprised to learn such a group was operating on campus. We condemn all forms of violence and harassment that threatens the personal security of both women and men and demand immediate action be taken to expel the students involved."
Also in attendance at the event was Deputy Finance Minister Yair Golan of the Meretz party, who pinned the lack of governance in the Negev region and the sharp decrease in Bedouin enlistment in the Israel Defense Forces on Israel's treatment of the sector. "The state has abandoned them," he said.
