The aquifer is Gaza's main water reservoir, providing over 90% of the population's needs. Hamas' Water Authority blames Israel for the problem, saying that it prevents the transfer of materials necessary for the construction of water treatment infrastructure.
Water Authority Director Mazen al-Banna told local media that the aquifer's water have dropped significantly due to excessive pumping, adding that seawater seepage was also to blame.
He also cited water contamination due to sewage leakage over Gaza's dilapidated infrastructure as another serious problem.
