Tehran debuted on Kan 11, Israel's public television channel in June 2020 and became an instant hit. The buzz surrounding the show made Apple TV executives take notice, and in September 2020, Tehran became the first non-English language series to be released on Apple's streaming service.
The first season received critical acclaim and picked up the award for Best Drama at the International Emmy Awards in 2021.
Created by Moshe Zonder, Dana Eden and Maor Kohn, Tehran follows "Tamar" (actress Niv Sultan), Mossad computer hacker-agent undertaking her very first mission in Iran's capital to help the Israel Defense Forces conduct an airstrike on one of the regime's nuclear reactors. When the mission goes wrong, the agent has to survive by her wits.
The second season will see Close play "Marjan Montazeri," a British woman living in Iran, who appears to be working with Tamar.
In addition to Sultan and Close, the series also stars Shaun Toub (Homeland ), Shervin Alenabi (Gangs of London), and Navid Negahban (Legion).
Close, 74, is one of the most acclaimed actresses in Hollywood. Throughout her 40-year career, Close has garnered numerous accolades, including two Screen Actors Guild Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Tony Awards.
To name a few, her movies included The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, The Paper, Air Force One, and The Wife, for which she received her seventh Academy Award nomination.
Close has dozens of television appearances to her name, including as the voice of Mona Simpson on The Simpsons. Most memorably, she played "Patty Hewes" on FX's Damages (2007–2012 ), which landed her two Emmy Awards.
The legal thriller was a huge hit among audiences and critics alike, winning four Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, a Casting Society of America Award, and a Satellite Award. Additionally, the series was nominated for a Producers Guild of America Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Television Critics Association Awards, among others.
