This will be the first time the corps – the border security branch of the Israel Police, which works in tandem with the military – will be honoring troops in this manner.
The Border Police Chief Citation of Merit will be awarded to male and female officers who meet the criteria of outstanding action in the line of duty in a way that highlights values such as initiative, determination, innovation, engaging the enemy, preservation of human life, and more, Cohen said in a statement.
The Border Police Corps numbers some 8,000 officers and troops who deal mainly with counterterrorism and serious crime. Border police officers often exhibit courage under fire, and preparatory work that would allow their commanders to award them with official commendations is currently in its final stages, Israel Hayom has learned.
Last year "was the most challenging year for the corps since the decline of the Second Intifada [in the early 2000s]," a senior Border Police official said, noting that "an increase in terrorist attacks fueled by Hamas required high alert, operational skill and proven proficiency" that saw troops foil attacks in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, often literally shielding civilians physically.
