The so-called "citizenship law" passed its first Knesset reading on Monday, despite objections from the Meretz and Ra'am parties, both coalition members. The proposal was passed with the support of 44 MKs, while five opposed it.

The bill was sponsored by Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked. MKs also approved a more strict version of the bill sponsored by Religious Zionism MK Simcha Rothman.
Both versions of the controversial bill now head back to the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee where they will likely be merged ahead of their second and third readings.
