The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the death of Muhammad Issa Abbas, 26, saying he had been shot near the al-Amari refugee camp.
The IDF said that the incident took place during a canvass for Palestinian suspects who approached a nearby Jewish community when soldiers came under fire from a passing vehicle.
The troops returned fire and hit the assailant, the military said.
A riot ensued, with dozens of Palestinians clashing with Israeli security forces, who used crowd control measures to disperse it.
