The decision was made in accordance with instructions from the Israel Police.
After the announcement, Abbas told Channel 12 News that "It's a hard sensation to feel threatened and have close security. About an hour ago, the Knesset Sergeant-at-Arms told me that there was a need to assign me a security detail and I agreed, like I accept the stance of every professional official in the Knesset."
Two weeks ago, the Shin Bet security agency decided to provide security for Religious Services Minister Matan Kahana after threats were made, apparently in response to Kahana's intention to introduce a number of reforms in key areas, such as kashruth supervision and mixed-gender prayer at the Western Wall.
