An extremely rare black flamingo was spotted in the salt pans at the entrance to the southern resort city of Eilat in recent days. This was the third time the unique bird was seen in Israel.

The flamingo looks identical to pink flamingos outside of its black coloring, which is the result of a genetic condition known as melanism, which leads to excessive pigmentation and as a result, the darkening of the bird's feathers.
The bird was first spotted in Israel in 2013 at an Eilat park it decided to call home for two years.
According to Noam Weiss, director of the International Birding and Research Center in Eilat, the black flamingo is a global phenomenon and likely the only such bird in the world.
