Matza served as Deputy President of the High Court of Justice between 2004-2005, under then-Chief Justice Aharon Barak. He served as a judge for 32 years, including a 14-year stint in the Supreme and High courts.
Matza publicly voiced his objection to Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People, passed in 2018, calling it "shameful" and saying it "sterilizes the democratic element of Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty."
He also publicly expressed support for the two-state solution, warning a one-state solution "will be the end of Israel as both a democratic and Jewish state."
In 2013, Matza received the Knights of Quality Government award from the Movement of Quality Government in Israel.
