According to reported, the plane, a Cessna 172, a single-engine aircraft, departed from Israel and "encountered a problem on the approach to the island's airport." It appears the plane suffered a technical problem and disappeared from radar moments before crashing nearby.
The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, assisted the Greek Navy in the search, local media said.
The victims of the crash were indentified as Haim Garon, who was flying the plane, and his wife, Esti.
Garon, a former deputy director at the Communications Ministry, served as a prosecution witness in the corruption trail currently waged against former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
