The Knesset plenum on Thursday passed a first reading of a bill that would allow the government to use technological measures to enforce quarantine, including a new technique developed by Israel's security establishment that would allow police to use the public's personal smartphones to identify our locations.

The technology in question entails an application that uses a smartphone device's GPS, which would prove that the user is where he or she is supposed to be, as well as the device's camera to confirm the user's identity.
The explanatory section of the bill states: "The purpose of this law is to grant the government he authority to mandate technological oversight of individuals required to quarantine, even if they have not returned to Israel [from abroad] in light of the increased number of coronavirus cases recently."
The bill cited "a need for efficient oversight of quarantine compliance."
The legislation has been moved ahead to the Knesset Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee for further discussion.
