The US armed forces negotiated with the Taliban and formed a secret deal that would allow American citizens to be safely evacuated from Kabul, CNN reported Tuesday.

The CNN report, which quoted two US defense officials, said that a "secret gate" had been  set up at Hamid Karzai International Airport by US special operations and that "call centers" were established to assist Americans wanting to leave the country following the US withdrawal and Taliban takeover.

The groups of American would reportedly meet at a point outside of the airport, where the Taliban would check their credentials and take them to the gate manned by American military personnel, who would bring them inside the airport while thousands of Afghans seeking to escape the Taliban-controlled country crowded outside the airport walls.

An official said that the Taliban escort missions to the airport occurred "several times a day."

As of Monday, when the US completed its full withdrawal after 20 years in Afghanistan, over 122,000 people had been airlifted out of the country since July, including more than 6,000 American civilians.

A suicide bombing last week claimed by Islamic State killed 13 American service members and more than 170 Afghans.

The Islamist rulers of Afghanistan on Tuesday celebrated the full US military withdrawal, with Taliban commanders and their entourage touring the airport.
