It was created by Michal Bratt, an Israeli choreographer who studied at Spain's most prestigious dance schools. Her latest show combines the best of both worlds: Flamenco and Jewish klezmer music, and is based on her personal journey of getting married and becoming a mother.
Shown from the perspective of the woman-wife-mother, ANIMA makes use of parody scenes and humor, as well as unique movement language, acting and dancing. It includes live Flamenco music, performed by Spanish Guitarist Jose Carrillo 'Fyty' and Jewish klezmer music performed by the 'Kleine Menshalach' Ensemble.
"I have been working on this show since 2016, when my first daughter was born," Brett said. "I wanted to express and share the new experiences I was going through, the feelings and struggles that accompanied me throughout the journey.
"I was also looking for unique and first-of-its kind music compositions that would reflect my experience. That is how the combination between Flamenco and klezmer music came about. These might seem unrelated at first, but both were influenced, among other things, by melodies of traditional Jewish prayer. They both have diverse rhythmic bases, overwhelming emotion and erupting energy."
