The US-born Steinberg was killed in a clash in the Shujaiyya neighborhood in eastern Gaza, which saw an anti-tank missile hit an APC. He was 24 at the time. Due to coronavirus restrictions, his parents had been unable to enter the country since 2019.
Speaking at the ceremony, Steinberg's father Stuart said: "I feel so blessed to come to Israel this year to be here with my beloved Max along with my family to share this memorable moment with all of you ...."
He said: "Max empowered me. He helped me become the best version of myself. He taught me to live for others... Max, when you were killed in 2014, a part of me died with you. But it is my memory of you and your legacy that keeps me going. My beautiful Max, my beautiful boy, you did not die in vain. And I will love you forever. May you rest in peace."
