Seconds before impact, Iron Dome crews on the ground noticed the error and gave the self-destruct instructions for the missile before it hit the aircraft.
The F-15 crew, according to the IDF, were unaware of the incident until landing safely back at base, when they noticed the fuselage had been damaged by shrapnel.
"The event was a complex, aerial incident in which the IAF was required to carry out missions in Gaza while simultaneously intercepting thousands of missiles," the IDF said in a statement on the incident.
"The IAF is investigating this incident and will learn from it, in order to better its ability to perform defensive and attacking missions simultaneously while maintaining Israel's security," it continued.
