The Health Ministry gave on Monday a green light for health providers to give booster shots against COVID-19 to those who are immunocompromised, even as they continue to deliberate on whether the general population should eventually get them as well to maintain antibody levels.

The new directive means that those who qualify would be able to get a third shot of the vaccine as early as four weeks after getting their second dose. These include people who have undergone various organ transplants or suffer from autoimmune diseases.
The ministry said that there was a growing body of evidence that such groups do not develop enough antibodies after only two doses.
It is unclear when the actual boosters shots will be administered, as medical providers have effectively ended the vaccine rollout until more doses arrive in early August.
